Instructions:

1. Activate the Yeast

  • In a small bowl, mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy. This means the yeast is activated and ready to go.

2. Prepare the Dough

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the warm milk, softened butter, and the yeast mixture.
  • Using a spatula or wooden spoon, mix the ingredients until they come together into a sticky dough.

3. Knead the Dough

  • Flour a clean surface and transfer the dough onto it. Knead by hand for about 8-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. If you’re using a stand mixer, knead with the dough hook on medium speed for about 5-7 minutes.
  • If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, a tablespoon at a time, but be careful not to add too much – you want it soft and slightly tacky.

4. Let the Dough Rise

  • Lightly grease a bowl with a bit of oil, place the dough in it, and cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

5. Shape the Dough

  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Transfer it back onto the floured surface and shape it into a loaf. Place the dough into a greased loaf pan.

6. Second Rise

  • Cover the loaf pan with a cloth and let the dough rise again for about 30-40 minutes, or until it has risen about an inch above the pan.

7. Optional Egg Wash

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). For a glossy, golden crust, brush the top of the dough with the beaten egg.

8. Bake the Bread

  • Bake the loaf for about 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.

9. Cool and Serve

  • Allow the loaf to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Tips for the Perfect Soft Loaf:

  • Humidity Matters: Adding steam to the oven can make your loaf even softer. Place a shallow pan of hot water on the bottom rack while baking.
  • Store Properly: Wrap in a clean cloth or plastic wrap to keep it soft for longer.
