3 Effective Home Tricks to Remove Cockroaches, Mosquitoes, and Flies
Dealing with unwanted pests like cockroaches, mosquitoes, and flies can be a real nuisance, especially during the warmer months when these critters seem to multiply. While there are many commercial products available to tackle these pests, many people prefer to use natural and cost-effective home remedies. Fortunately, you don’t have to rely on harsh chemicals to keep your home pest-free. Below are three simple and effective home tricks to help you remove cockroaches, mosquitoes, and flies from your living space without the need for expensive or toxic solutions.
1. Cockroaches: Use Boric Acid and Diatomaceous Earth
Cockroaches are one of the most resilient pests, but there are natural remedies that can help you eliminate them over time. Two effective and safe substances you probably already have at home are boric acid and diatomaceous earth. Both are non-toxic to humans and pets when used properly, but deadly to cockroaches.
How to Use Boric Acid:
- Mix equal parts of boric acid powder and sugar (cockroaches are attracted to the sweetness of sugar).
- Sprinkle the mixture in areas where you have seen cockroach activity, such as behind appliances, under sinks, and along baseboards.
- The sugar attracts the roaches, while the boric acid coats their bodies, dehydrates them, and kills them.
- Leave the mixture for a few days, then vacuum it up and repeat the process every week until the infestation is gone.
How to Use Diatomaceous Earth:
- Diatomaceous earth is a fine, powdery substance made from fossilized algae. It works by cutting through the exoskeleton of insects, causing them to dry out and die.
- Sprinkle food-grade diatomaceous earth in areas where cockroaches are likely to travel, such as along baseboards, in cracks, or behind furniture.
- Leave it undisturbed for a few days and then vacuum it up.
- Repeat as needed to keep your home cockroach-free.
2. Mosquitoes: Make a DIY Mosquito Repellent Spray
Mosquitoes can make being outside a miserable experience, and they’re notorious for buzzing around the house, especially at night. Fortunately, you can make an easy and effective mosquito repellent using essential oils you might already have in your kitchen or bathroom.
How to Make a DIY Mosquito Repellent Spray:
- Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup witch hazel or distilled water
- 10-15 drops of essential oils (citronella, eucalyptus, lavender, or peppermint work best)
- A small spray bottle
