Recipe Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. Add the warm water and olive oil or melted butter to the dry ingredients.
  3. Stir until a rough dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  5. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl.
  6. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  8. Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf.
  9. Place the shaped dough into the prepared loaf pan, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise for an additional 30-45 minutes, or until it has risen just above the rim of the pan.
  10. Bake the loaf in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  11. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
