Apple Brown Betty

Recipe Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the fresh breadcrumbs, melted butter, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt until well combined.
  4. Spread half of the breadcrumb mixture evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  5. Arrange the apple slices on top of the breadcrumb mixture in an even layer.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining breadcrumb mixture over the apples, covering them completely.
  7. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  9. Allow the Apple Brown Betty to cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream, if desired.

How to Store Leftovers

If you happen to have any leftovers (which is unlikely!), you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply warm the Apple Brown Betty in the microwave or oven until heated through. The topping may soften slightly upon reheating, but the flavor will still be delicious.

Food and Drink Pairings

Pair your warm and comforting Apple Brown Betty with a steaming mug of hot apple cider or a cozy cup of tea for the ultimate autumnal experience. For an extra special treat, serve it alongside a slice of sharp cheddar cheese or a drizzle of salted caramel sauce.
